summer of night

I just finished this book, which was written by Dan Simmons. It was rather reminiscent of Stephen King's It, but not quite as good. This guy is obviously a good writer, but no one will ever replace Stephen King (except maybe Joe Hill).

My rating: 3.5/5

hell or high water

This movie was about two brothers who pull off a number of bank heists in order to get money to save their family's ranch and the Texas Ranger (who is nearing retirement) who is on the case. It was a bit reminiscent of No Country for Old Men, but nowhere near as good. The overall plot was good, but despite clocking in at around 1:40, the movie felt slow at times. Also, it seems like the closer to 100% a movie is on the Tomatometer, the less I like it. Weird.

back to work

Jake had yet another follow-up appointment for his knee today and was finally released to go back to work. He'll only be able to work Saturdays for now, since that's the only day that aligns with his schedule. He's been working at our office a few hours each week, but I'm sure he'll like the extra money.

He's going to be getting a less restrictive knee brace, too. He doesn't have to wear his current one all the time, but I guess this will improve things even further. And, he doesn't have to go back again for two months.

bad moms

This movie was about a trio of stressed moms who can't handle being "perfect" moms any longer and they snap and do some un-mom-like things. There were some funny moments for sure, but there were some other moments that were supposed to be funny (like the grocery store scene) that just didn't work.

My rating: 3/5 (probably should be a 2.5, but one scene had me laughing till I cried and that probably deserves a half a point)

the invitation

This was a nifty little thriller. Admittedly, the first part of the movie was a little boring, but the last 20 minutes sure paid off--I did not see that coming. I don't want to give away the plot, but I guess you could say it was a dinner party gone awry.
