I’ve been intrigued by this place ever since I heard about it years ago. Elephants in Somerset County? That doesn’t seem like the ideal place for them. But all of the questions in my head were answered today. Mainly, the elephants have a one-acre enclosure and only go outside in the winter if the conditions are not icy, muddy, or below 32 degrees.

I saw recently that they were doing wagon tours of the property, so I went on one today. Not only do they have elephants, but also camels, buffalo, and reindeer. The reindeer were nowhere to be seen, and the buffalo were lying in the tall grass, so I couldn’t get a photo. But I was there for the elephants. They currently have four elephants (one male and three females). Much like the other animals there, it is a breeding herd, meant to preserve the species. What a cool organization to have just one hour from Johnstown!
