Once you get past the overly long set-up, this turns into one ass-kicking, car-chasing action-packed thriller. Brian thought it was the best action move he's seen since some Chuck Norris thing. I thought it was a pretty predictable thriller. But if you're up for some action, this film packs in plenty of that.

candyland

This was an interesting book. It was written by Evan Hunter and Ed McBain (who are the same person). I have read quite a few McBain books, but never any Hunter, but I will definitely check out some Hunter after this. For those of you not in the know, McBain is Hunter's pseudonym. McBain writes mostly crime novels. I'm not sure what Hunter's forte is, but the first half of the book was written in his style and the latter half was in McBain's. It was a pretty good book, but I was a little disappointed in the ending--I thought the twist was a bit much. But, overall, it was an enjoyable read.

angela & brian's year of fun

The past two years have been pretty hectic for us, what with remodeling a building and taking the plunge into small business ownership. And, while we still have a lot of work to do, we have vowed to make sure we take time to have some fun this year.

This weekend was a good start. Yesterday, we went to a Chief's game. While it wasn't the best game (the Chiefs lost 6-2), Jake had a great time. It turned out that one of his buddies was sitting in the row behind us so he hung out with him most of the evening.

And, tonight, Judy came over for a visit. Entertaining is one of the things I like to do and we have not done a whole lot of that for quite a while so this was another step in the right direction. We definitely have not been seeing enough of Judy, so I'm going to make amends for that this year.

So far in 2010, we've been having fun AND getting stuff done. The year is off to a good start!

up

What a great movie this was for Family Movie Night--great for kids and adults. For it being an animated movie, it had a darn good storyline. And the dogs in the story had me howling more than once. I was in absolute hysterics over the doberman (it wouldn't have been nearly as funny if it would have been any other breed). The bird character was pretty funny, too, but got overshadowed by the dogs for me. I don't know how anyone wouldn't enjoy this film.

the last hurrah

We had a nice dinner at my in-law's house this evening in order to celebrate Brian's birthday yet one more time. So, the month-long celebration is officially over. Thank goodness.

I've spent the past 2 nights doing what I always do around Brian's birthday--watching the Westminster Dog Show. I think he secretly hates that the dog show is on around his birthday, but I totally love watching it.

v-day

Yesterday was a pretty good day for Valentine's Day. We haven't celebrated the holiday in years, but since it's also Brian's birthday, we do celebrate that. Brian even took a well-deserved day off work.

I spent the morning working on PDS stuff. I was hot on the trail of something and wanted to get it figured out (I did). Brian and Jake mostly goofed off all day. I did a surf 'n turf thing for supper--flat iron steaks, shrimp, and parsley potatoes. We topped dinner off with a nice bottle of cab. It was a good day.

volver

This was another subtitled movie (Spanish). I've seen more subtitled movies in the past few months than I have seen in my entire life. The movie was ok. It had some pretty funny dialog in it, but you had to be paying attention. The storyline was unique and Penelope Cruz was great, I'll give it that much. On the other hand, I could have probably lived without seeing it.

(500) days of summer

Plot-wise, this was a typical date-type movie. But, the story had an interesting twist--instead of telling the story chronologically, the scenes were from a single random day in the relationship of the two main characters. Not that this is an original concept or anything, it was just well-done. I would definitely recommend this movie if you're into the romantic comedy drama sort of thing.

more progress

Today, Brian installed a ceiling fan/light combo in our library. Slowly, but surely, the upstairs is getting some attention. We also bought a door for the office. So, I guess painting the door, door trim, and window trim is next on my list. In comparison to painting the room, that should be a pretty easy task.

dead ringer

My mom goes to a lot of book sales and is always picking new stuff up for me. I had never heard of the author (Lisa Scottoline) of this book before, but I'll pretty much give anything a shot, so I put it on my reading list. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book. Parts of the plot were a little hokey, but the main character was very engaging and that is always a plus in my opinion. And, it was a page-turner, so that always makes a book go fast. I'm definitely going to check out some of the author's other books. Apparently the one I read is one in a series, so that will be a good place to start.

zombieland

Zombies and comedy--what more could you ask for? This was a pretty funny movie. I particularly liked Bill Murray's cameo--it was a classic. Woody Harrelson was great, too. Two thumbs up.

the weekend has been canceled

Well, not entirely. Our Superbowl shindig is still on tonight. Only our families are coming over, so I'm sure they will make it. Even if they don't, there's still going to be a party. New Orleans-themed food--you can't beat it!

However, the rest of the weekend was pretty much a bust. We had plans for a Chiefs game Friday night, but we didn't feel like braving the weather, so we stayed home. We didn't buy tickets ahead of time, so it was no big deal, but Jake was disappointed to miss the game. We've rescheduled for later in the month, so he'll still get to go to at least one game this season.

And, yesterday was supposed to be Jake's blue and gold banquet for the cub scouts, but it, too, got canceled due to weather. I guess that will be getting rescheduled, too, but no word on that yet.

Time to get back to cooking--I need to wrap up as much as possible this morning so I can grab some beauty rest this afternoon. Them Crooked Vultures were on SNL last night and I stayed up past my bedtime in order to watch, so I'm beat this morning (thanks to Buster getting me up at 7:30AM).

not january

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate January? There's just nothing good going on this month. It gets dark before 5:00. The weather is always horrible. I could go on, but I won't.

But, I'm trying to make the most of the winter and I've been doing stuff around the house that I won't want to do when the weather is nice. Among other things, my pet project this year is our home office. We painted it recently and I expect to have it completely done by the time the weather is nice.

So, anyway, I'm glad it's February. Today, I received the order form for the Cambria County Annual Tree & Plant Sale in the mail. Since I'm planning a mini orchard for the back yard this summer, this timely arrival made me happy. As far as I'm concerned, spring is just around the corner. To hell with whatever the groundhog has to say tomorrow.
